Miss Hawaii is proving that she also has a beautiful mind.
Stephanie Steuri was in Hilo on May 11 to meet with members of the Hilo Branch of the American Association of University Women and discuss her commitment to encouraging young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
Steuri offered her services as a guest speaker gratis for future partnering with AAUW in Hilo. In the fall, the women’s organization plans to include Steuri in several programs, serving as an inspiration to teenagers.
“Many young women are afraid of being labeled a ‘nerd’ if they show interest in STEM,” Steuri told the group. She hopes that in her role as Miss Hawaii she can help reduce the stigma of following such a career path.
Steuri said she is planning to continue her education at University of Hawaii at Manoa and aspires to become a veterinarian.
